Are you a traditionalist who thinks that the dessert table is a dispicable ploy to remove the cutting of the cake from the wedding event run sheet? Believe it or not, there are people out there that are adamant that a beautiful display of cupcakes just doesn’t “cut” it when it comes to weddings [I hear the sweet tooths out there ~ shock! horror!]
Whether you are a wedding cake traditionalist or open to a variety of goodies to “sweeten” up your day we would like to introduce Sara from Lavender & Lace Cakes in Canberra. She currently specialises in made to order cakes, cupcakes, cake pops, desserts and cookies for weddings.
But our favourite thing about Sara > Her pink cupcake truck! Read on to find out more…
Share with us how you came to launch Lavender & Lace Cakes.
I launched Lavender and Lace Cakes in 2015 having spent several years baking for family and friends.
Tell us a little bit about Lavender & Lace Cakes and the products that you offer.
We specialise in wedding cakes and special events such as birthdays however can do most things on request. In addition to cakes we offer cupcakes, cake pops, decorated cookies and macaroons.
What inspires you when it comes to creating your stunning cakes?
I love rustic and vintage styles and am inspired by beautiful fresh blooms and in season produce when it comes creating something one off and delicious!
Do you work on your own or do you have a team of cooks?
I work mostly on my own but have help from my amazing mum who has become a great baker to help me get through those busy weeks! She also supports me when we are out and about at markets and has become a crucial part of helping to grow my business.
What areas do you service?
Canberra and surrounds and coastal and regional areas on request.
Do you offer cake tastings or any other special packages? If so we’d love to find out about the products and services that you offer Brides.
I offer brides a complementary consultation where we catch up over coffee to go through ideas and options and provide a cake sample box for couples to try my flavours. In my view, the cake tasting is the most important part – brides have to know they are getting good cake!
Do you work with Brides to create their wedding cake and/or sweets for their special day?
I work closely with couples right up until their wedding day and generally work off their initial ideas and inspiration pictures to come up with designs that suit their theme, venue and colour scheme. After the initial consultation, I will often speak to brides a couple of times to work out final design details and flavours. I will usually speak to their florist at some stage if they are having fresh flowers on their cake and confirm arrangements with venues prior to delivery – so brides know once they have booked their cake there is nothing more they need to do and can be assured it will arrive safely on the day.
What kind of information do Brides need to consider when choosing their wedding cake?
Size, style and colour theme is a must! And their preferences for a traditional style or fondant cake with sugar flowers vs a more modern buttercream or semi naked style with fresh flowers and/or edible decorations such as meringues, macaroons and a drip.
Everybody loves cake but what are your favourite flavours? And what are the most popular styles?
The most popular styles at the moment are rustic semi naked or buttercream cakes with lots of fresh flowers. My favourite flavours are raspberry and white chocolate and salted caramel.
When you’re not making delicious treats what do you like to do in your spare time?
What is spare time?? Working full time and caking on weekends, I find it hard to fit in hobbies, however, if and when I have spare time, I like to walk my dog, paint and catch up on some reading (and maybe try out some new recipes while I can too)
