When you are a soon-to-be Bride there is literally nothing better than looking through Real Wedding photos, for hour and hours and hours…
With that in mind we think that booking in a photographer that will be there to capture all of the truly magical moments that you and your guests experience on your special day is one of the first things that you should have on your Wedding To-Do List.
Introducing the lovely, Mel from Mel Hill Photography. Mel is based in Canberra and is the principal photographer at Mel Hill Photographer (and can often be found working alongside her gorgeous hubby, Michael)
How long have you been a wedding photographer, tell us a little bit about the journey you went on to become a wedding photographer.
I started capturing weddings when I was 19 and still at Art School at ANU where I had my formal training. I started how most people start, capturing friends and family and growing from there. It was a good few years before I was able to go full time in my business but I haven’t looked back and now Michael (husband and second shooter) is full time within the business too. It has been a really rewarding journey and one that I have been on for over 10 years now.
What are some of your favourite aspects of being a wedding photographer?
It is such a joyous day not only for the couple but for the families too, I love the sense of celebration and happiness the day brings to everyone. I am quite a sentimental person so it brings me great pleasure capturing such a special time for people that I know will be in family albums and walls for generations to come.
When couples book Mel Hill Photography for their wedding do you work always work as a solo photographer, or are there other photographers in your team?
For weddings, people usually book me and Michael (second shooter and husband) together. However Michael is a talented photographer in his own right too and captures weddings by himself also.
Do you shoot digital and film or simply digital?
What are your favourite photographic styles when it comes to shooting weddings?
Michael and I have a really special mix together. Firstly having a talented second shooter is a fantastic asset because when I am concentrating on more formal photos Michael can capture the candid shots and the moments in between. We also showed an amazing example on our Facebook page while I was capturing a sunset Michael captured the most gorgeous silhouette at the same time, same location but greatly different images! We do a little bit of formal shooting and mostly candid/natural capturing particularly during getting ready photos, ceremonies and receptions.

Do you have a favourite love story?
How can you narrow it down to one? There are so many parts of love stories that make them special. People taking a chance with internet dating across countries and seeing each other for the first time and knowing they are the one, speed dating on a whim and finding your soul mate, couples who have been together for 10 years and the guy still cooks her breakfast every morning, people who have been in love since preschool, people who were in love in early high school and then met again in their late 20’s only to fall in love all over again; these are all love stories that have stuck out to me over the years. I guess for me it is how love happens between people that is so amazing to me, capturing part of their journey is quite special.
Do you have a limit of how many couples you book a month? When is the best time to book in?
Most people book around 12 months out from their wedding but you can be lucky and get some dates available around the 9 month mark too. Otherwise shoulder season (May and Aug-Sept) and off season (Jun-July) are usually more slow to book. Our maximum couples per month are usually 7 during peak season.
Do you offer engagement packages or pre-wedding shoots? Do you walk through locations before the wedding / with the couple before hand?
We do offer engagement photography too and chat about what locations are of interest to the couple before the big day so we capture the shots and backgrounds couples will really love in their images.
What other photography does Mel Hill Photography do?
We do everything! ha. After weddings there is a natural progression into maternity and newborn photography, which I decided to train and specialise in about 5 years ago. It has been lots of fun! I also do cake smashes and family photography. Michael is also a specialist in corporate head shot photography.
When you aren’t behind the camera what do you enjoy spending your time doing?
I have two beautiful children, Millie (3 years) and Max (18 months) who keep me very busy. They also love helping me in the garden which is another hobby of mine, we have a huge veg patch, over 35 fruit trees and 7 chickens.
