The thought of carefully weaving together the elements of your wedding theme can be exciting for some, and completely overwhelming for others. You can spend hours flipping through magazines or on wedding sites and Pinterest gathering all of your ideas, but, if we’re honest, it can be daunting trying to gather everything together in a way that accurately represents you and your Groom and the love you share.
Whether you’re looking for someone to add some whimsical fairy tale elements to your ceremony, or some beautifully romantic pieces to your reception venue (including some edible fancies!) we think Sueno Designs are a great contact to have in the Canberra region.
Joanne is the wonderful #bosslady and what an inspiration she is… We had to asked her what she did outside of Sueno Designs, because we thought she quite literally lived and breathed weddings!
Can you tell us a bit about Sueno and how the business came about?
When I was planning my wedding, in 2012, I was excited. As a fashion designer in Sydney, I’m creative by nature and I was looking forward to meeting with a few of Canberra’s decorators to see what they could offer. Unfortunately, I was left disappointed. I felt that the decorators were more interested in showing me what they had done before rather than listening to what I wanted. Nobody offered unique and tailor-made styling options.
I decided to move to my hometown of Canberra and utilise my skills and talents which led to the birth of Sueno Designs. I wanted every couples wedding to feel like a dream hence the name “Sueno” meaning dream in Spanish.
With my fashion and graphic design skills, I wanted to create a one-stop-shop experience for people. I included stationary such as invitations, table charts and place cards into my styling and decorating packages so that the designs would flow from the vision board and invitation right through to the bridal table, candy buffet and thank you cards. Everything links perfectly. I also wanted to focus on key trends and unique details in creating that memorable wedding.
Since Sueno Designs began two years ago, I have styled countless events and I hope I’ve helped add to couples’ happiness on their special day. I have now expanded on my services offering all kinds of event styling such as engagement parties, babyshowers and Christenings.
Where are you based and what areas do you service?
I am located in Queanbeyan and service Canberra and surrounding regions. I may be able to travel upon request however prefer not to advertise that as I have a young child.
Do you have styling / decorating packages that couples can choose from or do you work on customising each Wedding?
The central idea of my business is to offer tailor-made customised weddings and events styling. I understand people need and want different things. However, I am currently putting together a few simple packages for those who may like to choose set packages. I’m working on a catalogue of items for hire available to those who wish to style their own wedding.
Do you have a particular style or theme that you specialise in?
I try to be open to what people want. I meet with couples and we discuss styles and themes that they may prefer. Over the last two years I’ve done rustic weddings, garden party weddings, vintage weddings, shabby chic weddings, elegant weddings and everything in between. I enjoy creating concepts and am open to any style and theme.
Do you have a wide range of products that couples can choose from? Do you have a warehouse or studio that couples can visit to select items (whether you are styling or they are going DIY)
I have a wide range of products available on my social media pages. At this stage, I do not have a studio as I work from home. I also offer DIY which is a hire service and plan to have a range displayed in a studio soon!
What inspires you when it comes to selecting your pieces?
I rely on my imagination. I can walk into any room and visualise the outcome instantly. I tell people that I can make any venue come alive. I am inspired by the little details and individuality of the pieces. I am all about linking design elements and following colour palettes very closely. I also like my events to have an aspect that people will remember such as how well the candy buffet matched the styling décor and the table numbers that matched the invitation so well.
How early should couples book in for your styling services?
Couples should book between 8 and 12 months prior to their wedding. When identifying the perfect styling for my clients, I take into consideration the couple’s vibe, venue, colour palette, the cake and flowers. I then create a vision board to share with my clients to make sure I’ve captured everything. It is a process that should never be rushed.
What advice do you have for brides when they are working out their wedding design style when it comes to props and styling?
My advice is to remember the details and make sure they fit within your vision/colour palette. I always think of weddings like a jigsaw puzzle – each piece creates the whole. Small details can make a big impact. I love using Pinterest with my clients to showcase different styles and details.
What do you love most about styling weddings?
I love everything about it from the planning and preparation through to the buzzing feeling you get when you’re setting up. Most of all, I love the feeling that I have made a brides dream come true.

When you’re not styling weddings what do you love to spend your time doing?
I love spending time with my highly active, happy and energetic two-year-old son, Luka. I also work casually for Cue Clothing as a fashion Sales Consultant. I love traveling, shopping and relaxing with a book (when I get the chance!).
For 2017/2018 what sort of trends do you think there will be with wedding styling?
Steering away from the rustic look, 2017 /2018 is all about industrial, contemporary, monochromatic, and metallics. Modern furniture and décor will create sleek and classy weddings. Forget about the traditional one-colour tone, this classic approach is all about various neutrals, softer colours and plenty of gold. If modern isn’t your style, mismatching and vintage is still one of the trends we expect to see however incorporating glamour pieces such as crystal chandeliers and plenty of greenery will create a garden vibe.
