If you’re planning to book a wedding photographer to document your special day you will ultimately be spending your entire Wedding day with them by your side (whether you know they are there or not, sneaky little things they can be!)
With this in mind it really is essential that you do your research and find a photographer who you and your partner get along with, someone who can easily put your mind at ease when you’re awash with emotions and someone who can have a little fun with you as you take on one of those most important photo shoots you’ll ever have the pleasure of being a part of.
With that in mind, we thought we would introduce you to Tracy from Tracy Lee Photography in Canberra. Tracy is a wedding photographer who loves telling visual stories with fresh, fun, natural images…
How long have you been a wedding photographer, tell us a little bit about the journey you went on to become a wedding photographer
I have been telling wedding stories for 4 years. I started as a portrait photographer and kept receiving requests to cover weddings. I did my first one a few years ago and have been hooked ever since.
What are some of your favourite aspects of being a wedding photographer?
Oh my gosh- where do I start? I love being able to to get to know my couples over a period of time. We get to chat all things about their day and plan for awesome photos which capture the whole story from beginning to end. The buzz of capturing the unexpected gets me super pumped. I adore seeing the little moments and details and that happen throughout the day. These for me are the crucial elements that add that extra meaning to a couple’s story.
I get to meet some pretty amazing people with awesome stories.
When couples book Tracy Lee Photography for their wedding do you work always work as a solo photographer, or are there other photographers in your team?
I am the main photographer at all my weddings. I often will bring along a second photographer for 3-5 hours. I have a select group of wonderful photographers who are super fun to work with and know the approach I take to covering a wedding day.
What are your favourite photographic styles when it comes to shooting weddings?
At initial client meetings, I often hear they have chosen Tracy Lee Photography because of the story telling aspect of the photos. Also the relaxed nature of my approach and the laughter captured. I am a sucker for light hearted fun and people who don’t take themselves too seriously and love a good belly laugh.
I take my job seriously of course (the blisters, broken lenses from clambering over rocks and sunburn testify to that) but having clients who trust me and love a bit of a fun adventure always turn out to be the best partnerships. These are the clients who turn into repeat clients with couple shoots, puppy shoots and baby shoots. It helps if they love a good wine too 😉
If you have packages can you tell us a little bit about them and if possible some price ranges to give couples an idea if it suits what they had in mind. If you don’t have set packages if you can suggest a few popular options that couples go for and we can discuss the fact that packages are all tailored to suit each couple.
I have 3 simple packages and all come with edited digital files and an online slideshow, starting at $3200.
5 hours coverage
8 hours coverage
A premium package (all day coverage with products and a couples session)
They can be seen on my website with full pricing. Couple’s frequently mention how frustrating it is when they can’t find pricing on websites. It doesn’t mean they are only shopping on price, but most clients do have a budget and want to know if their favourite photographer fits within that budget.
Add ons include:
Extra photographic coverage
Custom designed photo albums (one of my favourite things to do)
Do you have a limit of how many couples you book a month? When is the best time to book?
I take limited number of weddings a year (between 15-20) so I have time for my family photo shoots and personal time. It also means I can get to know my couples and my wedding work doesn’t just become a production line.
I tend to book weddings 9-12 months in advance.
Do you offer engagement packages or pre-wedding shoots? Do you walk through locations before the wedding / with the couple before hand?
Having a couples session before the wedding day is a great way to play in front of the camera and get to know each other. My premium wedding packages includes one. I offer them as an add-on with my other photo packages as well.
Do you shoot digital and film or simply digital?
I shoot digital for weddings. I dabble with film for personal photography projects.
What other photography does Tracy Lee Photography do?
I tend to carry a camera everywhere with me and pop my adventures on my personal blog Just Stuff Musings. It’s sort of like an online journal for myself.
When you aren’t behind the camera what do you enjoy spending your time doing?
I am usually hanging out with my partner Mikey and our old dog George. We are addicted to good coffee, tending our vegetable garden, bike riding and visiting the local wineries around Canberra.
I love teaching and teach one day a week at a local school because I love the energy you get being with children and watching them learn about the world. It’s a real buzz. Plus, the kids don’t laugh at my attempts to play the guitar and sing.
For myself, I regularly dance, love my African drumming class, yoga group, hanging out at the National Folk Festival each year and making fun little videos.
I have an embarrassing addiction to some really awful tv shows that keep my company when hiding in my editing cave.
