Your wedding day is undoubtedly going to be the happiest day of your life. The one day where you can get away with all kinds of public displays of affection (PDA) without anyone saying a single thing. In fact, we are sure your guests will be found gushing over your love for the majority of the day!
And it’s all up to your photographers to capture those magic moments. Those stolen kisses, those loving looks, all of the beautiful moments that will rush and you wish you could go back and stay in that moment forever. We certainly envy the work of a wedding photographer (disclaimer: just on the wedding day, because we all know how much work you have to put in behind the scenes!)
Meet Kelly from Urban Avenue. This week she shared with us her story of joining Phil and becoming an amazing Wedding Photographer. We can’t wait to talk further with Kelly and Phil at the upcoming Gold Coast Wedding Fair (Have you got your tickets?).
How long have you been a wedding photographer? Tell us a little bit about the journey you went on to land where you are today.
Phil started Urban Avenue about 7 years ago, and I joined him in 2012. It’s funny actually, we both had creative careers and our paths crossed about 10 years ago but it wasn’t until he got into weddings that we realised we shared a love of photography. We’re friends and work well together so we thought we’d make a good wedding duo – we really do have a lot of fun!
What are some of the elements that you love most about capturing weddings?
When the groom first sees his bride – hands-down the best moment of a wedding! Guys generally keep it together and are pretty calm but they can’t hold in their emotions when they see their girl, it’s always magic.
Bride and groom preparation time is also fantastic, the anticipation is incredible and those moments with mums and dads, and their bridesmaids and groomsmen, all the really important people in their lives, it’s wonderful to witness. And after the ceremony, when everyone relaxes, and we whisk them away for a few photos – that’s when the crazy fun happens!
I love that every couple, every wedding, is unique. It’s your once-in-a-lifetime commitment, and you should absolutely celebrate it your way. We have so much fun taking our creative cues from a couple’s personality and style and capturing their genuine love and friendship in a way that’s special for them.
When couples book Urban Avenue for their wedding will you have someone working solo or do you have a team of videographers or photographers that will work on a wedding?
We’re a team – we always shoot as a duo. It means we can capture both bride and groom preparation, and we can be everywhere at once during the ceremony, it just makes the whole day more relaxed because we don’t need to rush. It also enables us to catch heaps of fabulous candid moments, and our styles complement each other so couples get a great range of photos to keep.
We bring our trusty sidekick along if we’re also doing video – we work well as a trio because we know each other’s styles and don’t get in the way. After so many weddings together we’re a well-oiled machine!
You are located on the Brisbane. What are your favourite areas and venues to shoot in?
There are so many options! We love Customs House and St Stephens Cathedral for a sense of history and tradition, but we also love Walkabout Creek for it’s natural bushland and lake, and it’s such a relaxed all-in-one venue. We also really enjoy getting out of the city and heading down the Coast, there are some fabulous venues like the Intercontinental Sanctuary Cove, and anything that involves a beach is just magical – we’ve had a few trips over to An Island Hideaway on South Stradbroke Island. And you can’t go wrong with a winery, whether it’s Sirromet near Brisbane or further afield.
How would you describe your style of film making?
I’d say fun, honest and relaxed. We get an understanding of what’s important to you and work out a plan with you, but on the day we roll with the punches – sometimes things don’t go to plan and that’s ok, you only get one wedding day and what matters most is that you enjoy it. We’ll make sure we capture the important moments but we don’t put pressure on our couples to get through epic posed photoshoots, relaxing and having fun is what makes beautiful photos. I think that shines through in our images, often our favourite photos are the candid unplanned “did you get that?!” shots! Our films are really moving versions of our photography – there’s a lot of energy and fun in there, but also those quiet, special moments. Our goal is for your album and film to look like you, not the same as everyone else’s.
Can you tell us a little bit about the packages that you offer for weddings & engagements along with a bit of a price guide?
We don’t really have “packages”, we tailor everything to what a couple want. For photography we start from $2275 for both of us for 4 hours, and you get your gorgeous photos on USB, from there it’s up to you and we can help you work that out based on your plans for the day. For film, just add $1695 for 6 hours of our awesome video guy and you’ll get a fabulous 7ish minute carefully edited highlight reel.
You can have an album or not (but I really recommend it, a professionally printed album is an heirloom and trust me – you’ll never get around to making one yourself), you can have a reception slideshow, you can have us for as long as you want, you can have a beautiful film, you can have whatever you want!
Do you have a limit of how many couples you book a month? When is the best time to book in?
It really comes down to what the weddings are like and where they are, generally we limit ourselves to 3 a month. If your wedding is in the traditionally busy times, around May and September, it’s wise to book everything 9 to 12 months ahead, but we’re finding things are changing and people are looking outside those “peak” times or even on weekdays and Sundays, so you might be able to get away with 3 to 6 months then. After all, once you’ve decided to get married, who wants to wait? Just ask – you never know your luck!
Do you offer engagement packages or pre-wedding shoots?
Yes we do engagement shoots if couples want them, some people don’t like them but it can be a great way for us to get used to how you move as a couple.
Do you walk through locations before the wedding / with the couple before hand?
Yes we scout locations before the wedding, not always with the couple because they’re busy and it’s not really that interesting for them, and it makes it more spontaneous on the day for them. We like to get a feel for the light and different backdrops or scenes we have to work with before the big event.
What other videography or photography does Urban Avenue dabble in?
In terms of dabbling, if there’s an opportunity to pull out a camera we’ll be there! Weddings keep us pretty busy, but we’ve been known to do some fashion work, and the odd event, corporate job or family shoot. Personally I love travel and photojournalism, but that’s a rare treat!
When you aren’t behind the lens what do you enjoy spending your time doing?
I’m an avid reader and I live by the water so I’m often hanging out by the bay admiring sunrise and sunset with my husband and crazy dog. Phil is a total bloke so he’s all about footy, and his three energetic boys (his gorgeous wife deserves a medal!).
